This is Mav – an extension in Greensborough, designed as a self-contained wing for our client’s mother. The project reimagines intergenerational living within a contemporary suburban home.

The addition connects seamlessly to the existing house, while being carefully planned to offer Sheena – Hannah’s mother – the independence and calm space needed to age gracefully in place. Privacy is balanced with connection, ensuring safe, accessible movement between both households.

Our feasibility study tested options from detached “granny flat” typologies through to linked extensions, providing Hannah and Tom with clarity on what was achievable, how much it might cost, and what value it could return. The study revealed that extending was the best path forward – preserving generous garden space, enabling a pool, and creating a wing that remains self-contained while still feeling part of the home.

Externally, the design reinterprets the materials of the original spec house in a contemporary way, introducing a lighter palette and larger openings. Interiors are pared back but warm, with finishes chosen for their lightness and texture to frame the surrounding gum trees and landscape.

Mav is both a practical solution and a generous gesture – architecture that allows three generations to live together with clarity, comfort and dignity.
